ÇANAKKALE MARTYRS MONUMENT

Brief History

Çanakkale Martyrs' Monument is a monument that was built in 1915 in memory of Çanakkale martyrs during World War I, located on the Gallipoli Peninsula of Çanakkale city. Çanakkale Martyrs' Monument, designed by Feridun Kip, İsmail Utkular and Doğan Erginbaş, is located on Hisarlık Hill in front of Morto Bay, overlooking the Dardanelles. The monument, whose construction started in 1954, was opened to visitors in 1960.

The aim of the designers is to create a monument that will impress visitors with its size and those who watch the monument from afar. While designing, the architects were inspired by the Roman triumphal arch form.

At the entrance of the monument, the symbolic martyrdom, added in 1992, welcomes the visitors.

You can examine the Çanakkale Martyrs' Monument model starting from the stairs on its four facades. The stairs are 7.5 meters wide, approximately 42 meters high, and are located between 4 pillars. The distance between the feet is 10 meters. The monument consists of a 25 meter by 25 meter square pedestal placed on these legs. Each of the legs on which the pedestal sits is wide enough to embrace about 18 people, 1.70 m tall, holding hands, and is about 25 people high, forming a tower on top of each other. A detail not included in the model is that there are eight reliefs on the four legs of the monument. Four of the reliefs facing the sea describe the sea battles, and the four facing the land describe the land wars. These reliefs were completed in 2002 and a new 45-meter-long relief was added to the site in 2004. When visitors arrive at the site, they pass through this point and reach the beginning of the monument.

Although the feet of the monument are reinforced concrete blocks, they are covered with cut stone. The indented surface you feel when you touch the feet of the model represents this stone coating. You can touch the crescent and star pattern on the ceiling of the monument, located in the middle of the feet.
