HAGIA SOPHIA

Brief History

Hagia Sophia is located in the Sultanahmet Square in the Fatih town of Istanbul, in the area called the "Historical peninsula".

Hagia Sophia, which was opened for worship on 27 December 537, remained as a church for 916 years, and after the conquest of Istanbul, it was converted into a mosque with the minarets added to the structure in 1453. While it was in the status of a museum between 1935 and 2020 in the Republican era, it started to be used as a mosque again in 2020.

The floor of Hagia Sophia is in the form of a rectangle of 100×70 meters. It has an interior area of approximately 7500 m². There are 107 columns in the two-storey building, 40 of which are on the lower floor and 67 are on the upper floor. The tallest of the columns are about 20 meters.
